Flame and water normally make an odd pair, but not so for these two heroes. The elemental superstars Fireboy and Watergirl are back in this sequel to the successful Flash game that made them famous. Fireboy and Watergirl: Temple of Light will knock your socks off with new gameplay and mind-blowing challenges.

Fireboy and Watergirl have escaped from the Forest Temple, but now they must make their way through the Temple of Light where reflecting light using gigantic mirrors is key. Much like in Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy, you must use the mirrors to light your way by reflecting sunlight off of a series of them to trigger switches and open doors, all while collecting gems and avoiding your character’s opposite element.

Once again, each character has their own separate control scheme using the arrow keys and WASD. You’re tasked with controlling both at once in what has to be one of the most difficult examples of ambidexterity we’ve seen yet. The goal is to make it through all 40 levels by finding each character’s respective exit door. In your way are a series of puzzles and traps that make it less than easy to accomplish this.

Fireboy and Watergirl are vulnerable to their opposite elements, but both are susceptible to the black pools of death spread throughout the levels. They’ll immediately evaporate in a poof of steam or smoke if they run into either deadly substance, so watch out! You’ll need to at times maneuver one of them while leaving the other stationary, most likely holding down a switch or button that opens the path for the other one. This can be incredibly frustrating if you’re not used to playing dual characters, but you can always invite a friend to help you.

The Temple of Light is a vast improvement on just your ordinary explorer’s adventure setting. Despite the game’s title, some of the levels are played completely in the dark save for the glow around each character. It’s very much like the Egyptian levels on that one Crash Bandicoot game that nobody remembers; sometimes, you just have to guess where the platform is and hope there’s not a fireball waiting for you. This adds a level of excitement to the game that will have players jumping for joy at the pure genius and ingenuity of the game’s creators. Give it a shot and see if you’ve got what it takes!
